Botany: | Dioecious plant, propagate extensively by stem cuttings. Stems are semi woody,green or pinkish green, climbing on support trees by means of adventitious roots arising from the nodes. Leaves 5- 20 cm long, ovate to broadly ovate, or cordate, often with unequal bases, tip acuminate or acute, entire, glabrous and shining, yellowish green tom bright green depending upon the cultivar. Flowering rare, mainly because the plants are cultivated in every 4-5 years under cultivation. Old plants (8-10 years) flower, spikes cylindrical and pendulous. Usually male or female plants only occur in any given locality, probably because local cultivar might have developed from a single source. Fruits are observed rarely.For majority of cultivars 2n=78 (Hexaploid). |
