Cotton leaf curl virus

Family : Geminiviridae
Genus : Begomovirus
Acronym : CLCuV

Introduction

Leaf curl disease of cotton caused by Cotton leaf curl virus is an important disease of cotton in India especially northern India resulting in substantial yield loss.

Major Diseases

Leaf curl and stunted disease.

Geographical Distribution

North Indian states.

Particle Morphology

Geminate particles.

Transmission Method

Transmitted by a vector Bemisia tabaci (Aleyrodidae); Transmitted in a persistent manner; not transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; not transmitted by contact between plants; not transmitted by seed.

Detection

PCR method is used in identification of the virus.

Host Range and Symptomatology

Gossypium barbadense (cotton) Unusual symptoms that include vein swelling, enations and the formation of leaf-like outgrowths.
Codiaeum variegatum L. (croton) Diseased plants showed typical symptoms of vein thickening, severe inward curling and a reduction in leaf size, and stunting
