Cowpea mosaic virus

Family : Secoviridae
Genus : Comovirus
Acronym : CPMV

Introduction

Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) is a plant virus has limited host range. Infected plants contain two kinds of nucleoprotein particle similar in size but differing in RNA content. Particles containing no RNA are also produced by most isolates. The RNA species in different particle types represent separate parts of the viral genome. Cowpea mosaic virus-yellow strain is commonly seen.

Major Diseases

Mosaic Disease

Geographical Distribution

Wide spread in India.

Particle Morphology

The virus is isometric particles measured about 20-24 nm in size.

Transmission Method

Transmitted by a vector Myzus persicae, Paraluperodes quaternus, Nematocerus acerbus; Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by grafting; transmitted by seed.

Detection

DAC-ELISA is used for detection of virus

Host Range and Symptomatology

Vigna unguiculata (Cowpea) Symptoms are vein clearing on the young leaves, mosaic with dark and light green areas.
Cajanus cajanMosaic, vein yellowing, leaf malformation.
Crotalaria junceaMosaic, vein yellowing, leaf malformation.
