Maize mosaic virus

Introduction

Maize mosaic virus (MMV) is a plant pathogenic virus known only from Gramineae. maize stripe Indian virus, sorghum chlorosis virus, zea mays virus are few strains commonly seen.

Particle Morphology

A virus with bullet-shaped particles 208 ± 4.4 × 66 ± 1.0 nm.

Transmission Method

Transmitted by a vector Peregrinus maidis (Homoptera: Delphacidae); Transmitted in a persistent manner; transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not transmitted by contact between plants; not transmitted by seed.

Detection

The virus could be detected in infected leaf tissues using a direct antigen coating form of ELISA (DAC-ELISA) .

Host Range and Symptomatology

Zea mays (maize) Green-yellow spotting, striping and vein-banding, some apical bending.
Sorghum bicolor (Sorghum) Chlorotic streaking, stunting and severe yield loss.
