Pea seed-borne mosaic virus

Family : Potyviridae
Genus : Potyvirus
Acronym : PSbMV

Introduction

Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV), a definitive member of the genus, Poty virus, is economically important and distributed world wide in most of the pea growing countries with maximum seed transmission of 90% causing yield loss upto 36%. The virus is known to be transmitted by 22 aphid species. It is also seed transmitted in Lens culinaris upto 44% and to a lower extend in many Vicia and Lens spp.

Major Diseases

Stunting Disease/Rolling Leaf Disease

Geographical Distribution

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh.

Particle Morphology

An RNA-containing virus with filamentous particles 770 x 12 nm.

Transmission Method

Transmitted by a vector Acyrthosiphon pisum, Aphis craccivora, A. fabae, Dactynotus escalanti, Macrosiphum crataegarius, Rhopalosiphum padi; Aphididae. in a non-persistent manner. Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation; transmitted by seed.

Detection

ELISA and RT-PCR.

Host Range and Symptomatology

Lens and viciaDownward rolling of leaflets, vein clearing and mosaic and distorted few/no flowers.
Pisum sativumTransitory vein clearing, rosetting of stem and branches, leaves dark green and leaflets folded adaxially, flowers malformed and often sterile, pods small, few misshapen seeds.
