Potato virus Y

Family : Potyviridae
Genus : Potyvirus
Acronym : PVY

Introduction

Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the most important plant viruses affecting potato production. PVY infection of potato plants results in a variety of symptoms depending on the viral strain. In combination with PVX, it causes an even more destructive disease known as rugose mosaic. Primary symptoms of common strain are necrosis, mottling, yellowing of leaflets, leaf drops and premature death of plants. Necrosis of foliage is a hypersensitive type of reaction and generally starts at veinal point on foliage and may result in spots or rings. Affected leaves may drop or remain clinging to the stem. secondary symptoms result in a dwarf plant with mottled or crinkled foliage. Brinjal mosaic virus, Potato acropetal necrosis virus, Potato severe mosaic virus, Tobacco vein-banding virus are few strains of PVY.

Major Diseases

Mosaic and mottle disease.

Geographical Distribution

Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Particle Morphology

A virus with long flexuous particles 700-800 x 12 nm.

Transmission Method

The main source of PVY innoculum are infected seed tubers. Secondary spread in field is through many species of aphids of which peach potato aphid is the most efficient.

Detection

ELISA and RT-PCR.

Host Range and Symptomatology

Solanum tuberosumMild to severe leaf mottling, or streak.
Sorbaria tomentosaMosaic symptoms
TomatoLeaf mosaic symptoms
Nicandra physaloides (cherry) Mild mottle or veinal necrosis.
Capsicum annuum (Bell pepper) Chlorosis, mosaic and leaf deformities
