Potato virus A

Family : Potyviridae
Genus : Potyvirus
Acronym : PVA

Introduction

Potato virus A (PVA) belongs to the genus Potyvirus infects potato causing mild mosaic similar to the symptoms caused by Potato virus X, differences can be difficult to detect visually, but PVA mottles may appear on the veins, and infected leaves look shiny. Infected plants may have a more open habit. Although visually similar to PVX, this virus is related to PVY and is spread by aphids.

Major Diseases

Mosaic disease

Geographical Distribution

Wherever potato is grown

Particle Morphology

Flexuous rod shaped particles of 730 x 11 nm

Transmission Method

At least seven aphid species are capable of transmitting PVA (including Aphis frangulae, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, and Myzus persicae) non-persistently.

Detection

ELISA, RT-PCR and IC-RT-PCR

Host Range and Symptomatology

PotatoMild mosaic on leaves, mottling appear on the veins.
