Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus

Family : Potyviridae
Genus : Potyvirus
Acronym : ZYMV

Introduction

Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus (ZYMV) is an aphid-borne potyvirus, regarded as a major pathogen of cucurbits in most regions of the world where these crops are cultivated. Muskmelon yellow stunt virus is common Synonym used.

Major Diseases

Mosaic disease

Geographical Distribution

Wide spread where these crops are cultivated.

Particle Morphology

Flexuous rod shaped particles measuring between 700 and 750 nm.

Transmission Method

The virus was transmitted by vector Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii in a non-persistent manner; Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation; not transmitted by seed.

Detection

ELISA and RT-PCR.

Host Range and Symptomatology

Cucurbita pepo (zucchini squash) Mosaic, yellowing, shoestring leaves, stunting, and fruit and seed deformation.
Cucumis melo (muskmelon) Mosaic, yellowing, shoestring leaves, stunting, and fruit and seed deformation.
Cucumis sativus (cucumber) Mosaic, yellowing, shoestring leaves, stunting, and fruit and seed deformation.
Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) Mosaic, yellowing, shoestring leaves, stunting, and fruit and seed deformation.
Lagenaria siceraria (bottle gourd) Severe mosaic, interveinal chlorosis and leaf deformation that resulted in fern-leaf appearance and severe fruit distortion.
