Banana bunchy top virus
Family : Nanoviridae
Genus : Babuvirus
Acronym : BBTV
Introduction
Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) is a plant pathogenic virus of the family Nanoviridae. The virus is so named because it leads to stunted growth that gives bananas a bunchier than normal look and eventually takes away a plants ability to produce fruit at all. Abaca bunchy top virus is one of the Synonyms.
Major Diseases
Stunted Disease
Geographical Distribution
Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, North Eastern States.
Particle Morphology
Virions isometric particle, not enveloped and 18-20 nm in diameter.
Transmission Method
Transmitted by a vector Pentalonia nigronervosa(Aphididae); Transmitted in a persistent manner.
Detection
Antigen Coating (DAC) -ELISA, PCR, Nucleic Acid Spot Hybridization (NASH) .
Host Range and Symptomatology
Host | Symptoms |
Musa spp (banana) | Bbtv retards plant growth, usually prevents bunch development and causes substantial economic losses. |
Musa sapientum | Symptoms include malformed and undersized banana bunches, reddish streaks on the pseudostem and leaf sheaths are loosely packed and split easily. in severely affected plants, the petioles and midribs show characteristic reddish brown streaks. |
