Procedure / Summary :

Eco-friendly management strategy developed against collar rot of apple has three different components namely effective botanical based cow urine based formulation, approach grafting, red soil. Field formulation of cow urine decoction was developed by putting three most effective botanicals namely 10 kg of Melia azedarach seed, 5 Kg fresh levees of Murraya koeningi and Eucalyptus in 50 lts of cow urine and kept for fermentation for 35 days. Thereafter it is filtered through cheese/ muslin cloth and used immediately or alternatively it was pasteurized at 58oC for 2 hrs for three consecutive days and stored for further use. For approach grafting, 3-4 young apple plants of resistant root stocks MM111/ M9 were planted at 1-1.5 ft around the stem and were approach grafted in the stem during the month of April- May. Combined application red soil (3ft area around stem up to 10 cm depth), cow urine decoction and approach grafting was highly effective in increasing the shoot length 42.6 cm as against 6.1cm in control untreated plants and exhibited lesion recovery the collar portion (38.4%). Use of this technology for continuous two-three years completely recovered the collar rot infected under orchard conditions,

Applications

Cow urine based formulation is applied as soil drench thrice in year during March, June and August @7.5 per cent (10lts/tree up to 2 ft around the stem)and red soil is added in 3ft area around the stem up to 10 cm depth.

Advantages

Technology developed is effective, eco-friendly and economical Since all the ingredients are easily available and thus has become popular amongst the apple growers the state.

Status of Commercialization : Not applicable
